We're in Colombia and going strong

Friends and family,
Here's a much too short note to let you know that Luke, Lauren and I are alive and doing great in Colombia.  I'll be writing more notes, and more personally.  This note is just to cover the basics.  Ok?

We arrived three weeks ago (July 2018), and immediately went into a spasm of setting-up-house mode.  (See the other blog note and more to follow.) Some days we'd make eight trips to the stores (Luke was counting.)

We live in a quite posh planned community about ten miles (45 minutes) north of Bogota.  Without the help of our Bogota friends, there is no way this could have ever happened...no way.  Luke's going to a solid school...almost a St Stephen's clone, with 12 boys in his class.  (The girls have their own classroom.)  We met several families from his class before the first day of school, so by the time school started, he was warmly welcomed into the group.

After the house was set up (2 weeks), getting the household accounts has dominated life. Really...you can't imagine, and there's more to do.

This week we're starting to get into a routine.  I'm devoting my next month to continuing learning Spanish, intending to thus make the remaining time here as enjoyable as possible.  Lauren's kept in stride with her business. Luke's in heaven.  Everyone's kept their cool and our attitudes are great.

Lauren had a five hour breakfast this morning with mothers from Luke's class.  The central order of business was planning a party at our house.  So, off we go!

This blog format makes it possible for you to post your own comments, questions and suggested topics.  I encourage you to do so.  WhatsApp is the communications method of choice. Download the app and use it to make free calls, chats video calls etc.  My Colombia number is +57 316 895 7928.
Lauren's is +57 316 739 9347.  Luke has one too.  Just ask. :-)

Hasta luego!

Hola from Colombia

Friends,

Our dear friends, Laura and Glenn, wrote a great book about their year-long Radical Sabatical experience in the Costa Rican jungles.
Our Colombia family-friendly adventure will not be as radical as theirs (I hope), nor will this blog be as funny as their book. (Only $16.99 paperback...here)

Peter and Margie have been on their more-than-around-the-world sailing cruise for about seven years now. Yikes!  They are real pros at crafting great stories.  Check out their blog for excitement and insight.   I promise you will find no stories of pirates or disabled sailboats approaching killer reefs on this blog (I hope).

I hope that you will find news, photos and short stories that amuse or interest you.  If you have things you'd like us to describe or questions to ask, please let us know in the comments or email.  Thanks!

Since we arrived in Bogota at the end of July 2018, we've been in hyper-nesting mode. We:
  • rented a house
  • bought a car
  • bought three phones, hooked up the internet (the key to Luke playing video with Miami buddies)
  • bought furniture
  • hired a housekeeper...Zoraida
  • started Luke in school; Colegio Cumbres.  (Luke says it's Awesome!)
  • bought three bikes
  • celebrated my Mom's 90th birthday through video link
  • decorated the house like crazy...featuring Carol Freysz Gutierrez's art
  • joined a gym (and actually worked out!)
  • hosted a small dinner party, several get-to-know-you teas and several play dates, and
  • booked two vacations in Ecuador (one with our good friends, Vance and Sandy)
Today's the first day to sit down and rest.
Okay, that's over.
Now it's time to get up and go practice my Spanish with a new practice partner.
Manana!
